DESCRIPTION

This reading seminar will be an introduction to Aion, (1951), where Jung makes an historical review of the archetypal imaging of the Self, through its forerunners in the symbolism of Gnosticism, Alchemy and Christianity. Jung responds here to questions about the relationship of natural symbols of wholeness to the traditional Christ figure. The Christian aeon coincides with the astrological period of Pisces. In this introductory seminar, the major symbols to be considered, therefore, will be the fish, and its association symbolically with the Christ figure. This is groundwork for an understanding of the phenomenology of the Self, and for further work on the structure and dynamics of the Self, which Jung addresses later in this volume.
